Sail Register Streaker Northern Paddle Open at Pennine Sailing Club

by Pete Tyerman 20 Jul 2014 22:44 BST 12 July 2014

11 Visitors joined 4 locals for this years open despite the forecast on flat calm for much of the country. Winscar's position and altitude as it often does gave us more and there was enough wind to race.

The first race was initially dominated by John Hollis although he was eventually caught by Alan Gillard. Ben Radcliffe, Dave Smith and Peter Kitchen chased. Unfortunately the closeness of the places led to a protest which went against Peter Kitchen. Final position were 3rd for Ben and 4th for Dave

The in the second race Ann Whitfield got of to flyer at the port end and was First at the windward mark only to touch with her boom end and lose the advantage. In a varied wind and difficult to read wind Dave Smith initially took advantage but was eventually caught bay Alan Gillard. Ben Radcliffe coming in third.

The 3rd back-to-back race had slight more wind and the conditions led to a very competitive race with place changing from lap to lap. The first 5 boat all had 4 different position on different laps with exception of Paul Jago who stayed in 2nd as the others moved up a down around him. The rest of the fleet also had a lot of competitive racing with only a relatively short time between first and last boat in.

Given the prospects when we set off Pennine gave us a good day's sailing.

Top 5 results:

1st A Gillard
2nd J Hollis
3rd D Smith
4th B Radcliffe
5th P Jago
