RLymYC Saturday Cruiser Racer Series - Race 2

by Hannah Neve 16 Jul 2014 18:17 BST 12 July 2014

Boats in two classes started together from the platform in the second race of the Royal Lymington's Cruiser Racer Series run under Lymington Handicap with Allan Hill's J30 Colleen deciding to give everyone else a head start!

In bright and breezy F5 conditions a course was set out to Christchurch Ledge with the strong ebb tide via the west side of Hurst spit and a visit to some of the lesser-known buoys in the Bay.

After a lumpy beat out to Hengistbury the boats rounded the Ledge Buoy in the order of their handicaps but all still in sight of each other, followed by a fast, exhilarating 'sleigh ride' back to Hurst, partly under spinnaker.

In Class 1, Richard Down's Elan 333, Islay made stately progress round the course to be first both over the line and on handicap. Simon Chartres' First 31.7, Herbie was somewhat hampered by a lightweight crew and a genoa problem to come in second.

In Class 2 Colleen was first back round the spit with John Turner's Dehler 29, Dynamic close behind but Richard Truscott's Konsort, Unity, revelling in the heavy conditions, worked the Hurst tides better to make up ground while dodging the kite surfers.

In the run down to the finish at the Lymington platform, Dynamic went aground and while extricating herself let Unity through to be second over the line but first on handicap.
