Breezy days and sunny skies at the San Pedro Sailing Regatta 2014 hosted by the San Pedro Junior Sailing Club (SPJSC) made last Saturday and Sunday a very pleasant outing for participants and spectators.
A total of 48 competitors participated in two fleets (Categories): Green Fleet (Novices) and White Fleet (Open/Advanced) for the Optimist class. Sailors hailed from Belize City Sailing Club (BCSC), Belize Sea Scouts (BSS), Caye Caulker Sailing Club (CCSC), Corozal Bay Sailing Club (CBSC), Placencia Sailing Club (PSC), San Pedro Junior Sailing Club and others.
Young sailors demonstrated their ability to adapt to an unpublished course that was announced at the pre-regatta gathering. In an effort to meet the standard trapezoid course length, racing officials had added an extra "running" and "upwind" leg in order to lengthen the course.
After two days of racing and six races with one drop, Faith Noel and Jerdon Anderson, both of SPJSC, took 1st and 2nd place, respectively. Antonio Ricardez Jr. of BCSC took 3rd place in the White fleet.
Alanis Badillo and Harrison Cadle Jr., both of CCSC took 1st and 2nd place in the Green Fleet and Badillo and Cadle showed that the CCSC is making strides in Caye Caulker's effort to preserve their sailing legacy. Rashawn Gonzales of SPJSC took 3rd place in the Green Fleet.
At the end of the regatta SPJSC Chair, Tammy Peterson, and also mother of the 1st Place said that "We are extremely grateful for the support of all the volunteers, clubs, Commodores and BzSA executive who were on "on-deck" and helped with this regatta. We are especially grateful to the San Pedro Town Mayor, Daniel Guerrero, who was on-hand to present the prizes. We also thank the regatta sponsor, Remax Southwind."
Belize Sailing Association Chair, Shelley Bradley, commented that, "The consistency and participation of all the club commodores and sailors must be commended." Bradley also noted that "these sailors are ready for the Belize National championship in November and the Placencia venue that will certainly test their skills."
The next regatta will be hosted in St. George's Caye by the Belize City Sailing Club on August 30th and 31st.
