North Wales Schools Sailing & Windsurfing Championships

by Hamish Stuart, RYA Wales 5 Jul 2014 08:11 BST

Denbighshire and Powys schools challenged at the top of the leaderboard for the first time in the North Wales Schools Sailing & Windsurfing Championships at Llyn Brenig Sailing Club.

Thanks to the OnBoard scheme, designed to give youngsters the opportunity to take up sailing, the events was more competitive than ever with children from across North Wales.

Sir Conwy just emerged as the top county in a very close fought race, with Sir Powys and Sir Gwynedd joint second and Denbighshire a close fourth.

The schools competition was won by St David's College, Conwy, with St Brigid's, Denbighshire, second and St Gerards, Gwynedd, third.

However there was an individual one/two for Bangor school St Gerards with Ciaran Jones winning the Clwyd Schools Sailing Association Trophy, beating schoolmate Chris Jones into second, with Phoebe Roberts of Ysgol Friars, Gwynedd, taking third place overall and finishing as the first girl.

Ceri Roberts of Llanidloes Primary, Powys, was the winner of Ken Champion Shield, finishing second and top Welsh competitor in the Regatta Fleet. Harry Pulford, St David's College, won the North Wales Coast Shield finishing first in the Topper Fleet.

"It was very pleasing to see the competition from all across North Wales," said Welsh Yachting Association national development officer Ruth Iliffe. "The overall prizes for best school and county were very tight. We would never have seen this three years ago, when Denbighshire and Powys would not have featured. This is the direct impact of OnBoard scheme and the investment in the areas by both local authorities and WYA. Scoring for the overall prizes was based around rewarding both participation and performance. The more sailors brought, the more points scored! Llyn Brenig SC put on an amazing professional event, it was really well organised. There was a foggy start but after it lifted there was loads of fun and some very tight racing. The Topper fleet was particularly close – anyone of four could have won it going into the last race."
