International Canoe National Championships at the WPNSA - Overall

by Gareth Caldwell 16 Jun 2014 21:26 BST 14-16 June 2014
Robin Wood secretly tuning his Canoe at night © Gareth Caldwell

The final two races of the Nationals were completed today and the results were true to form. Steve Bowen took advantage of Tony Robertshaw's 'crunchy' mishap and secured his victory in the AC fleet whilst being pushed all the way by Andy Gordon and Roger Howell.

Robin Wood continued to show his dominance in the IC fleet, and completed his collection of bullets. Lets hope he can fire these in the San Fransisco World's in September.

So, what did we learn about the differing hull shape designs? Well, not a great deal! Each design had its moment at the front of the fleet, and the results were pretty consistent with what would have been expected a few years ago when the same helms were sailing in the standard Nethercott shaped hull.

What was learnt was that dedication and application resulted in Robin Wood's excellent boat speed. He was seen secretly practising after last night's AGM and BBQ......all alone, in the dark. There are some doubts about whether his new boat is within the class rules, but it certainly pushes the boundary with regards to rocker and mid statin measurements!

The fleet would like to thank WPNSA, and in particular Frank Newton, for (again) running an excellent Championship. We were on our best behaviour, and hope to be invited back soon.
