With Alacrity crowned champions

With Alacrity have won the 2014 Sigma 38 National Championships. The WARTS, (With Alacrity Racing Team) as they are affectionately known, triumphed in the intense, closely fought battle with second placed boat, Persephone. Out of the seven races over the Bank Holiday With Alacrity took four wins over Persephone's three.

Entries were the highest this century and encouragingly seven Sigma 38 teams were competing in their first ever Championships. The class is actively committed to maintaining high standards of racing through a combination of coaching as well as a policy of cascading knowledge from established teams down to newcomers though friendly advice and a very active class website. Consequently not only the top three boats but the highest placed boat competing in their first Nationals and the highest placed non spinnaker boat were recognised.

Sam of Hamble was the highest placed new boat and finished a very credible fourth overall. This is particularly poignant as the recently launched Sam is named in memory of Sam Alexander who was killed on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan. Serena Alexander, his mother and co-owner of the boat, is subsidising the boat in his remembrance.

Sigmania, also competing in her first Nationals, was the first non spinnaker boat. Owner, David Linton, was delighted to be "persuaded to do it."

Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors Universal Marina, an independent family run marina on the Hamble, Elvstrøm UK, the British subsidiary of one of the largest sail lofts in the world and Hudson Wight, a progressive brand of technical sail wear, all these winners were awarded substantial prizes.

Chairman, Nigel Goodhew summed up the weekend "It's been a fantastic opportunity to enthuse so many new members about racing and all things Sigma 38, it certainly bodes well for the future."
