East Anglia holds some of the most important events of the National Squib class calendar this year. We start with the Squib Gold Cup which is being held at Royal Corinthian Yacht Club, Burnham from 3-5 May. The following month the Squib East Coast Championships are being held on 14-15 June at a new venue, Stone Sailing Club on the Blackwater, which promises great racing.
All this sets us up for the top of the season which is the Squib Championships being held at the Royal Norfolk & Suffolk Yacht Club at Lowestoft from 6-11 July. The RNSYC is very experienced in running successful championships and Squibbers can be sure of excellent and well run racing on the North Sea.
This year the organisers have a brilliant idea which is to run a parallel event, the Broadland Regatta on Oulton Broad, for those who feel racing at sea is not their thing. Waveney & Oulton Broad Yacht Club, home to a very strong fleet of Squibs, will host this.
The social scene will be shared between competitors in both events which makes for some very good off water evenings - at home entertainment hosted by local sailors, Sam's Fish Night, racing the local one designs on the Broad, wine tasting at Adnams at Southwold and the prize-giving dinner in the splendid setting of the RNSYC clubhouse. More details of both events from www.squibnationals2014.com.
This is an event to suit all levels of Squibbers and should be a great combination of sailing and socialising. Sailors from the several Squib fleets in East Anglia - Lowestoft and Oulton Broad, Aldeburgh, Waldringfield, Levington, Stone and the mighty Burnham fleet - will be heading up the A12 to race.
The Squib class originated over 40 years ago with an inspired design by Burnham's Oliver Lee and has spread over the whole British Isles. Nearly 900 have been built to date.
