Lightnings are go for the show!

by Lee Bratley 26 Feb 2014 18:41 GMT Stand F12, 1-2 March 2014

Ok, so we'll need to tear you all away from the new D-Zero admittedly, but with a shiny new red boat, an all-new (and very clever) two piece mast system to present to the world and a bar nearby, why not come over to the Lightnings at the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show to usher in the start of the new season that lies ahead.

Following several years of various developments, Lightning builder John Claridge used 2013 to turn his attention to the mast of the Lightning368, more specifically, how to create a transportable rig that could be effectively used with both 'Standard' and smaller 'SR' sail. The result? a two-piece, composite mast with a very clever joint and two sizes of lower section to suit your chosen rig.

In terms of stiffness, the new mast system falls in between the current choice of carbon-topped 'bendy' mast and (for the heavyweight/ambitious lightweights) the 'Stiff' pole.

All newly built Lightnings will be offered with this single new mast - just the choice of rig size being the option: 'Standard' or the slightly smaller 'SR' which is aimed at the lighter adult/youth sailor.

This new system will make it much easier - and affordable - to hold two rigs in your armoury depending on 'Guru' predictions for the day as, at the moment - and in keeping with the class' ethos of inclusive sailing - both rigs sail off the same handicap (currently 1154).

With the new boat also showing off the development work that John has carried out over the years, we're excited to share our latest incarnation with all of you.

So, here's to a great show for everyone, come and say hi and have a chat / banter and here's to a fantastic season of sailing - whatever craft you're in.
