38th GAES Christmas Race in Palamós - Day 4

by Jaume Soler 21 Dec 2013 19:35 GMT 17-22 December 2013

Excellent sailing after a frustrating morning

Clouds and no wind brought frustration in the morning of day four in Palamós following the strong N wind on Wednesday that left the fleets ashore. The expected early morning wind did not blow as forecasted due to the clouds and it looked like another day without sailing was on the way. But past midday, skies began to clear up slowly and the wind began to pick up and by 14.00h races were underway for almost all classes under blue skies, sunshine and a nice SW Garbí wind, 6 to 8 knots.

Estonian sailor Deniss Karpak (Starter) has climbed to the top of the standings in the Finn class taking over Slovenian Olympic medallist Vasilij Zbogar (Esimit Europa) who is at just one point from the leader. Third place is for Polish sailor Milosz Wojewski (Viatarade).

With three races sailed in the 49er class French team Julien D'Ortoli and Noe Delpech (EMD) arrive at the medal race as leaders with a four point difference over Olympic Danish medallist Jonas Warrer and Peter Orsted. Third place is for Finnish team Lauri Lehtinen and Kalle Bask (Seahow). So the battle for victory tomorrow will be among these three teams.

Danish dominance still in the FX with Ida Marie Baad and Marie Thusgaard (Wabreaker) in the lead at one point from team Lin Ea Cenholt and two from German sailor Phillipp Müller.

New lead in the 470 men for Spanish team Jordi Xammar and Joan Herp after a sixth and a fourth in today's races. Tied in second place are Spanish sailors Onán Barreiros and Juan Curbelo (Anye) and the leaders up to today, French team Pierre Leboucher and Nicolas Le Berre (Balaïtous) have dropped down to third overall.

Amy Seabright and Anna Carpenter are on top of the leader board in the 470 women followed at one point by Ukrainian team Anna Kyselova and Anastasiya Krasko and French sailors Maëlenn Lematre and Aloïse Retornaz.

In Laser Standard, Spanish sailor Jesús Rogel arrives at the Medal Race leading comfortably the standings with 17 points advantage over Spanish Joaquín Blanco, so he has the opportunity of becoming the winner of the GAES Christmas Race. Third place is for British sailor Martin Evans, at one point from Blanco.

Belorussian sailor Tatiana Drozdovskaya keeps at the top of the Laser radial women leader board and will sail the Medal Race with only two point advantage over Polish sailor Agata Barwinska. Spanish Irene Miras drops from second to third place overall.

Spanish sailor Mon Cañellas leads the Laser Radial men fleet followed by Spanish sailor Héctor Dominguez and Polish sailor Adrian Raczkowski in third place.

British lead in the 420 with team Max Clapp and Joseph Burns (Izzy) followed by Spanish sailors Paula Barceló and Margarita Alba (EBE-Bauhaus) and Polish team Romaniuk and Katarzyna Goralska third overall.

Last day of racing today for the 29er GAES Christmas Race and Copa de España with final victory for Spanish team Nil Mas and Jordi Llena, leaders from day one. Second place is for Dutch sailors Cas Van Dongen and Daniel Robert Bramervaer and third place is for British team MimiEl-Khazindar and Ben Batten. The women team winners of the Copa de España are the Munté sisters.

The medal races will be sailed tomorrow with first warning signals scheduled at 11.00h in sunny weather and a good SW wind, 10 to 15 knots.
