Supernova Travellers' Series at Haversham Sailing Club

by Paul Undrell 13 Oct 2013 15:37 BST 12 October 2013

The penultimate round of the Supernova travellers' series took place at Haversham Sailing Club on Saturday 12th October with 7 visitors joining 17 club boats to enjoy 3 races in an ever decreasing wind.

Race 1 started in a gentle F2 and Richard Pakes was quick to remind the more regular Nova helms of his boat speed and lead the race from the start. In his wake various dog fights were taking place in the variable and shifty breeze and at the finish it was Pakes from Steve Hawley and Adrian Lumb.

Race 2 was held back to back and once again it was Pakes first to the windward mark, But with pressure changing across the course the leading group were swopping the lead in quick time, but once again it was Pakes who took the bullet, this time from Chairman Earnshaw and Ian Casewell.

The fleet then retired for a splendid lunch, but unfortunately so did the wind such that Race 3 was starting in F1(ish) a situation which saw a third of the fleet opt for an early shower. The remaining hardcore sailors set off around the lake and it was Earnshaw who took the lead from Bruce Howett and Steve Hawley. Positions at the front did not change as the wind slowly died away with the lake resembling a mill pond by the end.

There was close racing throughout the fleet as witnessed by a number of tied positions but at the end of a testing day the meeting was won by Pakes with his 2 bullets followed by Earnshaw and then Hawley.

The fleet now head to Bartley next Sunday for the final event of another successful Supernova year.
