Horning Sailing Club Open Dinghy Weekend 2013

by Holly Hancock 23 Sep 2013 10:36 BST 21-22 September 2013

Horning Sailing Club's Open Dinghy Weekend took place over the weekend of 21/22 September 2013 and drew almost thirty starters over the 2-day event on Hoveton Little Broad.

Saturday afternoon was overcast and breezy, with plenty of capsizes, especially amongst the young Topper sailors. There were some strong, consistent performances, particularly from Lucy Drew and Abi Holden sailing an Enterprise with two wins, brother Curtis achieving a similar feat in his Laser. With a race each going to Josh Means sailing his Oppie and Will Penny in his Topper, the competition was still wide open in the Allcomers C fleet.

Sunday's sunshine and lighter winds attracted around 10 visiting boats to the event, including Enterprises from Ely and Beccles, Toppers from Beccles and several Bittern dinghies.

The main racing event for the Woodcock Salver saw a battle of youth as opposed to experience. Four visitors and four home boats took part, the close racing resulting in a forced retirement when one boat was holed following a collision shortly after the start of the first race. However, after a quick boat change the day's racing was able to continue. It was particularly competitive at the front of the fleet, where Kevin Edwards and Kevin Bilham were vying for the lead.

With the wind dropping during the afternoon leaving the Broad looking like glass, the result came down to being decided on the final buoy of the last race where Kevin Edwards crewed by daughter Pippa managed to overtake to win the Flirtatious Cup for helm and crew.

HSC's Flying Enterprise Trophy and Cadet Trophy for helm under 16 years both went to Lucy Drew sailing Shadow.

The Allcomers C Cadet Trophy went to Josh Means sailing his Oppie, just ahead of Will Penny, whilst first visitor was Ellie Edwards. More wins for Curtis Drew secured the Onyx Barometer ahead of Kim West also sailing a Laser.
