International Canoe Europa Cup at Loch Lomond Sailing Club - Day 2

by Gareth Caldwell 30 Jul 2013 21:02 BST 29 July - 2 August 2013

The long distance race was scheduled for day two. This was over a distance of approx 15 miles, and marks of the course included some of the islands dotted around Loch Lomond. The three miles first beat started in a pleasant force 3, but Hells Gap lived up to its name and, by the time the boats were reaching the first mark, a steady force 5 was blowing.

Alistair Warren led the fleet down the next tight reach, followed in hot pursuit by Gareth Caldwell, Robin Wood and Steve 'Twisted' Bowen.

Despite the strong winds, calm patches in the lee of some of the islands, and numerous wind shifts, the fleet coped admirably and positions remained fairly constant. Alistair led home the IC fleet, and Robin the AC.

The club have arranged for a Distillery Tour at sponsors Glengoyne tonight. In an act of extreme cunning, Phil Allen gave up his ticket to enable a fellow competitor to attend. The fact that these two are neck and neck in the racing results at the moment has not gone unnoticed!

IC Fleet leaderboard:

1. A Warren, 4 pts
2. C Brown, 4 pts
3. G Caldwell, 4 pts
4. S Clarke, 10 pts
5. P Hignett, 12 pts

AC Fleet leaderboard:

1. R Wood, 2 pts
2. S Bowen, 5 pts
3. S Goacher, 5 pts
4. T Robertshaw, 10 pts
5. A Stahl, 11 pts
