Over the weekend of 20th/21st July Castle Cove had a big party to celebrate their 90th Anniversary. Saturday was a day for the kids (and the adults who were wishing they were still kids!) with games on the beach, Le Mans style Topper racing, a sandcastle competition won by Erin Pank, and a giant water slide! With the weather still making us feel like we were in the Med everyone enjoyed an evening outside enjoying a Hog Roast and music.
On Sunday we were greeted with a perfect breeze for a pursuit race round the harbour and after a quick briefing on how we would achieve a very ambitious attempt to photograph everyone after the race the slower boats set off while everyone else enjoyed another cuppa.
45 dinghies and keelboats took to the water with a photo finish between Barry Grant and Alex Green in their Fireball and Sam Barker in his Musto Skiff, unfortunately for Barry youth won this time round and Sam was crowned Anniversary Pursuit Champion! With best dressed dinghy going to Mark and Liz Matthews and best dressed Keelboat to Mike Conroy.
Then for the photo... with everyone gathered in the middle of the harbour, in theory between two buoys, the horn went and everyone set off downwind... well almost everyone...spot the boat going upwind! Everyone retired ashore after a great days sailing and enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea and a slice of birthday cake, fittingly it was cut by our oldest and newest members – Eric Barnes (who thought we should have waited two weeks and we could have celebrated his 90th as well) and Steve Rose.
Many thanks to Moatt Sails for providing the prizes, Rolly's Cake Company for the cake and Helena Darvelid for taking the photos under testing conditions!
