Crewsaver Topper Inland Championships at Grafham Water Sailing Club

Arriving at the Crewsaver Topper Inlands 2013 on Friday night for the third national event of the year, we were soon greeted by the very friendly Grafham water staff. We then set off to set up camp for the night.

The Saturday morning was a windy one, top end of a force 4. Sailors started of the day with a large breakfast then rigged their boats and got changed. By the time we had done this the wind had dropped by 5 mph still windy but not blasting. At launch time it was a fast broad reach down to the start line. The first start got away and it was a clean start. Then it was my start this was also a clean start and it was a tough first beat as it was still windy. Dan Budden was leading around the course and wasn't letting anyone past him as he won the race. Joe Mullan won the race in the other flight.

In the break between first and second race the wind had dropped and started to shift but the first flight got away the shift came in and then the race had to be abandoned. The wind had then almost disappeared going down to 5 mph. We were then sent to shore but only so that they could relay the course, this only took half an hour and we were racing again.

The hail started to come down hard and fast but the race still went ahead. Dan Budden the previous race winner managed to make his way up the fleet and win the race. In the other flight I managed to win the race on the last fetch.

Then, for the final race of the day, the wind had dropped even more for the lightest race of the day. Oliver Aldridge winning, Patrick Croghan winning the other flight.

That was the racing done for the day, it was time for the AGM. The event was well attended and ran well.

Sunday the morning wasn't anywhere near as windy as the morning before, it was about 5-10 mph. All the sailors launched and it was time for the racing to start.

The first race was underway and Ben Whaley lead all the way round the course for the first win of the day and in the other flight Ollie Dixon was the race winner.

In race two the wind was still the same and once again Ben Whaley got away and won the race for his second bullet of the day and in the other flight Elliot Kuzyk winning his first race of the weekend.

It was now the last race of the day. Four people could still win the event and is was all down to this race. The top 5 got away, but Ben Whaley was left behind to do turns but was catching fast. Ben Jennings went right up the second beat by himself tacked on the lay line and came in first by a long way in the other race Alexander Hughes was doing the winning. The race win for Ben Jennings won him the event with Oliver second and Ben with an amazing comeback in third.

Prizes were awarded well down the fleet due to generous sponsorship from Crewsaver.
