Enterprise Midland Double Chine Series at Earlswood Lakes Sailing Club

by Paul Young 18 May 2013 09:09 BST 12 May 2013

This event, the second in the 2013 Enterprise Midland Area Double Chine Series sponsored by Speed Sails, was held at Earlswood Lakes Sailing Club on Sunday 12th May. A moderate South Westerly wind with many gusts gave exciting conditions. The sixteen boat fleet included seven visitors from Midland SC, Redditch SC, Roundhills SC, Rugby and Daventry SC, Sutton SC and Ulley SC.

The first race got away after a general recall, Ian Ingram crewed by Marie Bond (Earlswood Lakes SC) got a good start from the middle of the start line to take the lead. Matt Velamail crewed by Tim Brownell (Ulley SC) were second and James Morley crewed by Rachel Burkitt (Ulley SC) third. Paul Young crewed by Nancy Gudgeon (Midland SC) were fourth close behind until an unfortunate poor tack and shipping a lot of water put them out of contention. Neil Barrett crewed by Sophie Jones (Roundhill SC) who had recovered brilliantly from a terrible start now took fourth place. Ian and Marie held on to win with Matt and Tim second and James and Rachel third.

After a good lunch the second race started on the same course but with the start now on the club line. A tight first beat and a very crowded windward mark saw many place changes, James and Rachel led at the mark but the following gybe on to port tack into the middle of the fleet was not their best idea and allowed Matt and Tim to take the lead. Neil and Sophie and Ian and Marie fought constantly for second place until eventually Neil and Sophie pulled away to secure second place behind Matt and Tim. Ian and Marie held onto third with the race finishing this order.

With rain now falling and the wind increasing a little, a depleted fleet started the third race. Matt and Tim led from the start with the real battle for second place. Mike Cossey crewed by Christine Barron (Sutton SC) battled with Paul and Nancy for two laps until James and Rachel joined in as well. Places changed often. At the finish Matt and Tim were first with James and Rachel second, Paul and Nancy third and Mike and Christine fourth.

Winning helm Matt Velamail thanked everyone at Earlswood Lakes SC for a good day's racing.
