Frensham Pond's annual Cadet class open meeting is always a big event on this water. Saturday 13th April was no exception although sailing conditions were not easy. This year's racing took place in a shifting south to west breeze and penetrating rain. This did not put off the thirty eight entrants including twelve visitors many from some distance.
Four races were sailed, two each side of midday. By the afternoon the wind had started to gust although it remained shifting and there followed a few capsizes. But the event was dominated by a local crew, Zat Boat, sailed by Alex Philpott and Harry Fitzsimmons, who took first place in three races. It was a tightly fought battle at times with another popular local crew, Jack and Laura Hardie who finished second overall. A fine performance was shown by first visitors, Lucy and Cally Terkelsen from Stone SC, who sailing unfamiliar water clocked up an impressive fourth, third and second finishes.
Event sponsors, Guildford Marine again came up with a fine array of prizes and competitors and families enjoyed the famous Frensham free tea, or in this case less tea and more cakes and crisps.
When interviewed the winning helm, Alex Philpott said: "It was good competition out there with shifting wind and a lot place changes. All good fun."
Tribute was paid to the race officer, Keith Videlo and to the safety boat crews who had some work to do in the afternoon.
