Lymington Town Sailing Club Early Points Series - Race 4

by Alastair Beeton 26 Mar 2013 15:51 GMT 24 March 2013

Lymington sailors undeterred by cold conditions

Race 4 of the Lymington Town Sailing Club's Sunday Early Points series saw fifteen boats make their way to the start. With an air temperature of only 2 degrees and a brisk 15 to 22 knot breeze the wind chill was well blow zero.

Only the most hardy, or should that be foolhardy, ventured out to the Solent race area to the west of Lymington River. First away was the fast handicap fleet with 9 boats. Peter Barton soon established an insurmountable lead in his foiling moth managing 4 laps before some of the rest of the fleet had done 2 laps. He was followed by Tig Williams in his RS600 and Geoff Havers with Lewis Brown in a 29er.

There was a very close battle between the three RS400s with Matthew Thomas and Steve Nicholas managing not to loose too much running dead down wind without a spinnaker after a rigging error prevented its use. However by the end of the race John Cooper and Becci Wigley were in front and Keith and Julie Willis just managing to pip Matthew and Steve.

The medium fleet saw only three boats venturing out with Tim Knight, in his Laser, leading followed by Nigel King racing his Solo for the first time.

The slow handicap fleet of four RS Teras had a close race with the Tera Sports of Tom Goacher and Liam Willis coming out on top of the Tera Pros after handicaps had been applied. Although the LTSC Early Points Series takes a break over the Easter weekend, racing continues with some fun Windward Leeward racing on Saturday and Sunday and the annual Black Rock Race on the bank holiday Monday.
