The first Act of the 2012 Extreme Sailing Series™ is just under a week away – the international teams are already training hard out in Oman, whilst the final details are being put in place to ensure that the 8-event global circuit is accessible to fans on and off site.
Whilst most of Europe has been gripped in an icy winter, the Extreme 40 sailors have been enjoying the warmth of the Omani climate training out of Mussanah. There is no doubting the caliber of the sailors involved but with plenty of new faces, it will take time for some teams to find their true form. On paper the favourites would have to be the French team of Groupe Edmond de Rothschild – runners-up for the last 2 years, will this be third time lucky for the all-French team? View all the team line-ups here.
The circuit is now entering its sixth season and the ‘stadium racing’ concept that sits at the heart of the Extreme Sailing Series is beating stronger than ever. Live coverage will be streamed online, competitions with some great prizes, the app for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad is being improved, the ability to follow the action via the Live Race Console providing all the relevant info in just one place will keep the fans around the world up to speed; whilst for the spectators and fans attending Act 1 there are plenty of activities on and off the water to ensure a great day out. Go to Muscat Info for all the race timings and activities.
Oman Air has come on board as Official Airline to the Extreme Sailing Series. Wayne Pearce, chief executive officer of Oman Air, commented: “We at Oman Air are happy to be sponsoring Oman Sail again. We have been truly impressed by the visibility the Oman Sail events have generated. This year, by positioning Oman Air as the Official Airline of the Series, we hope to entice the sailing and marine sport communities and fans across the event venues to try the superior Oman Air experience and the uniqueness of Oman.”
