Following another highly successful East Coast Piers Race in 2011, Marconi Sailing Club have again raised money for local charity The Cirdan Trust and the Essex Air Ambulance. This year the cheque for £20,140 was presented to The Cirdan Trust by club commodore Neil Pembleton at Marconi Sailing Club’s annual Winter Dinner Dance held on Saturday 28th January 2012.
The Cirdan Trust based in Maldon organise sailing trips for young people from underprivileged backgrounds providing them with an unforgettable sailing experience on some of Maldon’s iconic Thames’ Barges.
Held last July, Marconi Sailing Club welcomed over 55 competitors from across the country and Europe for a weekend of competitive racing in the East Coast Piers Race and Colne Point Race. The race commenced from the club in Steeple with competitors sailing up the East Coast to Clacton Pier (a shorter course due to weather) and back with competitors in the short course turning at Colne Point.
The 2011 East Coast Piers Race was won by Chris Sproat and Georgina Burke from Stoke’s Bay with the Colne Point title taken by Sandy Jordan from Minnis Bay.
