Frostbite Trophy at East Lothian Yacht Club - Day 1

by Mike Rigg 19 Jan 2012 20:08 GMT 14 January 2012

The postponed Frostbite Trophy finally got underway on Saturday 14 January in chilly and windless conditions, with a good turnout of 14 boats, which included 2 Phantoms, 3 Streakers, 2 Rooster 8.1's and 4 Lasers. The OOD, Bill Roberts, set a "p" course hoping not to disadvantage any class of boat.

The Phantom of Donald Mclean quickly set the pace with the Phantom of Jimmy Sandison clicking at his heels. Once the windward mark had been rounded the Laser 8.1's of Gerry Hughes and Ian McGonigal started to pull the Phantoms back. However with the very light wind conditions a fight was going on just behind these leaders with Ted Hill in a Solo fighting off the challenges of John Hookway and Mike Rigg both in Rooster Streakers, and Sheila Smith in her Laser.

As the wind dropped to next to nothing the OOD shortened the course after the Phantoms and Laser 8.1's had just started their 3rd lap so it was a race to the line for the remaining fleet. Using the light conditions and a flooding tide the Solo was able to shake off the Streakers and Laser and beat them to the finish line.

Unfortunately the wind finally dropped to zero whilst the Phantoms and Laser8.1's were trying to complete their last lap with Donald McLean's Phantom holding them at bay. Using average lap results, the Solo (Ted hill) took First place, followed by Streaker 1775 (John Hookway) and Streaker 1771 (Mike Rigg).
