Plum Pudding Race at Ulley Sailing Club

by Rosalie Hill 4 Jan 2012 14:03 GMT 26 December 2011

The traditional fancy dress Plum Pudding Race on Boxing Day, 26th December, brought a very successful year for Ulley Sailing Club, between Rotherham and Sheffield to a close. Father Christmas, arriving with his young helpers in his Santa Express (the club's festively decorated mini tractor and trailer), started the race.

Some 18 boats, and 28 brave people, including an assortment of Santas, elves, fairies, penguins and snowmen, took to the water in unseasonably warm but very windy conditions. Only 14 boats survived to the end of the first lap in a race which was hotly contested by many of the club's past and present national class and youth champions and the large watching crowd was entertained by some spectacular nose dives, pirouettes and capsizes.

In a very diverse fleet Jamie Mawson, this year's national RS 600 series winner, led on the water throughout but former Enterprise Junior World Champions, Mark and Simon Pinder in their Merlin Rocket won on handicap, from the club's latest young talent, 17 year old Max Nicholson (winner of both Yorkshire and Humberside Youth Sailing Association Series this year) sailing a Laser Radial.
