What a great turnout - well over 30 boats for the second weekend of the Yorkshire Dales SC Frostbite series. With wall to wall sunshine all day, it was more like a spring day than anything remotely frost related.

Light breezes from the North mixed things up a bit with the RS800s and 49ers haring round but not trapezing enough to hold their handicap. The visiting Fireball of Ian Preist and Lucy Lingard took advantage to win both races. Soeren Vonsild (Finn) also put in a solid performance with a 2nd and a 4th.

In race 1, the Lasers did well on handicap and were led by 'comeback kid' Dave Johnson in 3rd and John ‘Spring Chicken(1965)’ Simms in 5th. They were split By John Turley in his Europe before the second Fireball of Peter & Richard Clayton in 6th.

A slight change of course for Race 2 clearly helped some of the asymmetrics as they no longer had to bother with any of that pesky zig-zagging or gybing downwind and so Keith / Matt Escritt (29er) were 2nd behind Preists’ Fireball while Phil Whitehead in his Vortex managed a 5th behind Soeren. There was great result for Will Hide and Emma Clayton in their Mirror who got the 3rd to go with a 10th in race 1, and they're now the leading Junior boat overall.

Phil still leads the series by a reduced margin from Soeren, Keith, Mike Saul (RS800), and Chris Pickles (RS200/49er).

Pete Slingsby has been consistently top 10 and is tied with Dave Johnson to joint-lead the big Laser contingent in 7th overall.

With 44 boats entered so far the success of the series is already assured, but visitors can still join us for both the Frostbite series which continues until 18th December and then the Icicle series from 1st January to 26th February. Heated floors, hot showers brilliant food great views, superb conditions and a warm Yorkshire welcome are all guaranteed – and for the bargain price £25 per series or from £35 for both.

Did you know?
First rate...

First rate is still commonly used today to mean the best, and second rate, for something that is mediocre or inferior in quality. But when the phrase was first coined it had a very specific meaning – and there wasn’t just first and second rate, but third, fourth, fifth and sixth as well!

The ships of the Royal Navy were classified by the number of cannon they carried: a ship that carried a hundred or more guns was classed as First Rate, one that carried 90-99 cannon, Second Rate, 64-89 cannon Third Rate, all the way down to Sixth Rate, which was a ship with 20 guns. The number of guns was a clear indicator of the importance of a ship, so much so that ships that didn’t carry any cannon weren’t rated.
