Dubois Cup at Yacht Club Costa Smeralda - Preview

The Dubois Cup regatta organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and scheduled to take place in Porto Cervo from June 4th to 6th combines sailing, sustainability and an extremely good cause. The event, which is open to sailing yachts designed by Dubois Naval Architects with an LOA of 24+ metres, may be the first major superyacht event to balance its estimated carbon footprint and in addition, acts as a platform to raise funds for research into childhood cancers.

Racing will take place over two days and, with just over a month to go until the opening ceremony, eight superyachts ranging from 30 to 58 metres in length have enrolled with more expected to confirm their participation in the coming weeks. The fleet will showcase some of the latest Dubois designs with some of the competing yachts such as Twizzle (57.5m, Royal Huisman) and Zefira (49.7m, Fitzroy Yachts) having been launched in 2010.

In partnership with Yacht Carbon Offset, Dubois has chosen to offset the estimated carbon emissions of the event. This means balancing the estimated carbon footprint created by the event against equivalent emissions reductions achieved through green energy projects. Tonne for tonne, emissions caused by travel, energy use, fuel consumption and waste are offset by equivalent greenhouse gas reductions from projects using renewable power, for example.

Besides providing fantastic racing in a stunning setting, since its inception in 2007 the Dubois Cup has provided a voice for child cancer charities. Ed Dubois, founder and CEO of Dubois Naval Architects Ltd and Dubois Yachts Ltd, has a personal interest in supporting the work of charities dedicated to research into childhood cancer and has recently launched the Dubois Child Cancer Fund (DCCF). This year, the regatta will once again aim to raise a significant sum for ongoing research into childhood cancers, including rarer types such as Neuroblastoma. In the same way that survival rates for childhood Leukemia have increased dramatically over the last twenty years, Ed Dubois is committed to making this happen in other areas by funding specific research programmes, peer-reviewed by specialists in the field.

In addition to being a wonderful occasion at which to meet old friends and make new ones while enjoying thrilling sailing against the unique backdrop of the Costa Smeralda, the Dubois Cup also gives participants and supporters a unique opportunity to contribute to combating pollution and promoting scientific research.
