The place to be for 2012 Olympic sailing events

by Susie NationGrainger, RYA 28 Mar 2011 17:27 BST 29 July - 11 August 2012

The Nothe Gardens in Weymouth has been announced as the proposed ticketed spectator location for the Olympic sailing events and is anticipated to hold up to 4,600 spectators providing a great Games experience with views close to the medal course.

As planning consent has not yet been granted for the temporary structures and facilities required at the Nothe Gardens during the Olympic Games, the RYA asked LOCOG to clarify the ticketing situation, should the application be unsuccessful. LOCOG assured the RYA that if planning permission isn’t obtained for the site any successful applicants of sailing tickets would receive a full refund. Paul Williamson, LOCOG Director of Ticketing said: “Subject to securing planning consent, LOCOG will contract a third party to deliver and operate a ticketed site at the Nothe Gardens, to create an entertaining and informal environment for people to watch all the sailing action together on the grassy banks overlooking the medal course.

'We believe the proposals for a ticketed onshore site will give operational certainty on spectator numbers to the best natural vantage point for the medal races. This will help the Weymouth and Portland communities operate as best as possible during the Olympic Games and therefore, we are hopeful of a positive outcome on the planning application.

'However, should LOCOG not be successful in obtaining planning permission, successful applicants for sailing tickets would of course receive a full refund for the tickets they applied and paid for.'

Inside the spectator area there will be a giant video screen and full commentary to keep spectators up to date with all the action as it happens out on the water. Toilets and catering facilities are also proposed for the site.

Park-and-ride facilities will be available for spectators attending the sailing events and those visiting the Games from within the Weymouth and Portland area are recommended to walk, cycle or use local bus services wherever possible.

Tickets to watch the Olympic Games Sailing events are priced between £20 and £55 with Concessions such as Pay Your Age are also available for some sessions of sailing where under 16s literally pay their age and the over the 60s have the opportunities to pay just £16 pounds to see world class sailing in action.
