All on the last race...

A good turnout of 16 Vortexes turned out fot the last GP bash for the Inland Championships at Rutland Sailing Club. Competitors from as far as Glasgow and Devon were greeted with a very variable force 1-3 for the first race. Both Phil Whitehead and Keith Escritt were late for the start, however Phil managed to claw back to second after a storming Jonathan Carter from Rickmansworth took a well deserved win, with Chris Tillbrook and Angus Winchester forth.

The course turned out to be very one sided for the quick windward leeward part of the course and counting the numerous laps became an issue for some. Phil won this race after a big squall came through, James Whitehead (no relation) from Filey enjoying the new breeze just pipping Keith for second slot.

The third race was held after a long delay and unable to count to 6 Phil carried on up the course whilst Keith just behind on the last mark sailed to the finish. Realising his mistake Phil charged back to the last mark and just sneeked back in front of James, Jonathan and Neil Spink.

After a welcomed meal and refreshments courtesy of the association and a good rest, we woke to a 5mph light wind in the morning. Keith won the first race after a blinding port tacker , with Chris taking second slot and Neil a close second. Dan Partington from Bala showed ballistic light wind speed and won the 5th race from Keith and Phil.

As has happened frequently over the last few years the decider was the last race as both Keith and Phil had equal points and number of positions. Phil held out to the left on the first beat, and had a great lift to the first mark and held this to the finish taking the Inland title. Neil Spink was giving Keith a good run for his money near the finish.

Thanks to Rutland, still one the best inland locations in the country for a great open meeting and including us in the mixed Laser class fleets.
