Kasteel Cru Double Handed Regatta at Royal Southampton YC

by Mike Garvey 8 Jun 2010 07:59 BST 5 June 2010

A perfect day for Double Handed sailing

The Royal Southampton Yacht Club's third Double handed regatta, which compliments their famous double handed series, was held on Saturday the 5th June on a perfect summer’s day in the Solent.

As is common with sunny days the day began with no wind and a glassy Solent, but the wind gods were with us as an early sea breeze developed from the SE and remained all day blowing steadily at circa 10 knots with the occasional gust up to 14 knots. So an ideal day for double handed racing providing plenty of sun cream was applied.

With numerous regattas taking place space was at a premium but an early start by the race management team secured the SE corner of the Hillhead plateau enabling excellent windward /leeward courses to be set for all 3 races which started after a short postponement awaiting the sea breeze. There were 2 IRC classes and 1 RSYC club class with very competitive racing in all fleets especially on the start line which saw an occasional OCS which is unusual for double handed racing.

Class 1 (IRC) was won by No Retreat a Corby 33 crewed by Will Overton and Graham Gair with a score of 3,1,2. 2nd one point behind was Malice a HOD 35 crewed by Mike Moxley and Huw Philips with a score of 2,4,1 and 3rd only by a count back was Jammin crewed by Andrew Campbell with a 1,3,3.

Class 2 (IRC) was resoundingly won by Moondog a Laser 28 crewed by Andy and Peter Pickett with 3 bullets followed in 2nd by Whistler a First 31.7 crewed by Mark Lloyd and Richard Willetts with a score of 3,2,2 and then Pyxis a X332 crewed by Kirsteen Donaldson and Mike Short with a 2,3,3.

Class 3 (Club) was won by Meg a Copland Harrier crewed by Rowan Horner and Ian Hemingway with a score of 1,2,2. Next up was Asante a Maxi 1100 skippered by Andy and Sarah Horwood with a 2,1,3 and in 3rd was Fusion III a Gibsea 28 skippered by Will Bridges and Tom Collins with a score of 6,4,1.

After racing the prize giving was held in the RCYC club house with presentation packs of bottles of Kasteel Cru Premium lager for the winners and wine for the runners up kindly generously supplied by the race sponsors Kasteel Cru.

The next double handed race is The Round the Island race on the 24 July.
