Comet Nationals at North Devon Yacht Club

by Chris Robinson 25 May 2010 07:59 BST 22-23 May 2010

Twelve sailors attended the Comet Class Association Championships at North Devon Yacht Club, 22nd-23rd May, on the estuary of the Taw and Torridge Rivers. The two day event was on the hottest weekend of the year so far, with light winds.

In race one Clive Chapman was first to the windward mark, followed by Henry Jaggers. Clive hit the mark, which allowed Eddie Pope and John Windibank to get past. Eddie caught Henry to win.

With the wind beginning to falter, Henry was first around the first mark in race two, followed by Helen Leivers and John. The fleet bunched on the reaching legs, and Eddie and Ben Palmer sailed through to take first and second places.

In race three Clive and Henry got around the windward mark followed by Chris Robinson and Brian Weatherly, but the rest of fleet miscalculated the strength of the adverse tide, and were left stranded to leeward of the mark.

In the final race John took the lead, followed by Ben and Eddie. Eddie passed Ben, and gave chase to John. These two pulled away from the fleet, while Michael Ettershank took third place.
