Tricky conditions for Itchenor Sailing Club’s Swallows

Itchenor Sailing Club’s premiere Swallow class event is the open meeting for the prized Norman Moore Trophy. This event always attracts a large fleet and this year was no exception despite the tricky conditions. The five race series held over the Bank Holiday weekend was reduced to just three as two races were abandoned due to a lack of wind.

Mastery of the strong tides and the light shifting wind plus a slice of luck were needed. First to prevail were Guy Knight and Steve Hammett in Spectre with a decisive win in the first race on Saturday morning. The afternoon race was abandoned as the sea breeze failed to build.

Two races were possible on Sunday with victory to Harry Roome, Lavinia Massey and Mark Chilton’s Skua in the morning. The afternoon race turned out to be the decider as Monday’s race was abandoned, once again for lack of wind. Skua established an early lead but was caught by Marengo as the wind all but failed in the Thorney Channel. As the wind returned Carolyn Brigg steered Marengo into a commanding lead. Crewed by Sue Glover and Ginny Fox, Carolyn held off all challengers to take the race and the Norman Moore Trophy.
