Jouster shows the fleet how to do it
The J/109 Class gathered in the start area on Sunday in glorious sunshine and a gentle breeze. After a short postponement the J/109 fleet were away and Jouster (Adam & Helen Wright) had a perfect start and led the fleet off towards the shore before tacking back and laying South Ryde Middle, closely followed by Beth of Five Star (Guy Knight), Red Arrow (RAFSA) and Jambahla (Gillian Ross/Richard Sainsbury). Jahmali (Mike & Sarah Wallis) had been caught in traffic after the start and rounded middle of the fleet. Meanwhile Just So (David McGough), J-Dream (David & Kirsty Apthorp) and Just William (Will Leonard) were caught out by the tide and had to double tack to lay the windward mark.
After a reach to North Ryde Middle, Jouster hoisted her spinnaker and led the J/109 fleet to Flying Fish. Jahmali and Shiva (Matt Boyle) moved into 2nd and 3rd respectively during the run. A perfect layline on the second beat saw J-Dream pass Beth of Five Star, Audajious (David Jobson) and Red Arrow.
Some of the J/109 fleet hoisted their spinnakers on the reach from South East Ryde Middle to East Bramble before gybing to gain maximum tidal benefit for the long run back to Wight Vodka. Jouster held off Jahmali on the final beat whilst J-Dream retained 3rd place and Beth of Five Star moved ahead of Shiva to finish 4th.
There is a break in the Raymarine Warsash Spring Series for Easter next weekend, whilst some of the J/109 fleet will be competing at the Red Funnel Challenge.
