The 42nd running of the Dauntless Boatyard Leigh-on-Sea SC Brass Monkey race took place on December 27th in a gusty 15-20 knot North Easterly wind. Several boats sailed down on the tide from Thorpe Bay, experiencing some nasty conditions off the end of Southend pier. Some had to turn back and others capsized including race winner Pete Thompson.

Once at the start, a port rounding course was set with a reasonably steady beat in from the Ray Gut to the shore. The reach along the shore was more difficult with some nasty holes. Using average laps to give similar race times for all competitors, with only the Spitfire of Pete Thompson and Chris Clarke completing 5 laps.

Nevertheless, a variety of monohulls were making great time skating on the waves. Leading these were Tom Stewart and Elizabeth Ross in a National 12 and the Contender of Chris Boghier. None of the other multihulls made it into the top 10, a witness to the outstanding performance from Pete Thompson. Thanks to our sponsor for prizes and providing free drinks from the bar.

Overall Results:

1st Spitfire, Peter Thompson & Chris Clark (Thorpe Bay YC)
2nd National 12, Tom Stewart & Elizabeth Ross (Northampton SC)
3rd Contender, Chris Boghier (TBYC)
4th Finn, Allen Burrell (TBYC)
5th RS600, Mike Izatt (Fishers Green SC)
6th RS400, Colin Walker (LSC)
