Hobie 405 Nationals at Holyhead Sailing Club - Day 2

by Bob Tuckwood 3 Aug 2004 19:50 BST Tuesday 3rd August 2004

A light and shifty wind SouthWest wind together with a 1 knot southerly tide made the racing very challenging, especially the starts, for the 16 junior/youth boats. After the first general recall the black flag was flown which concentrated the minds for the following starts which all got away cleanly.

Race 5:

Will Twemlow and Andy Bath picked the shifts up the centre of the race course to pull out a clear lead after the first lap. He was followed home by 3 Danish competitors.

Race 6:

The wind swung 45deg. for this race and Emile Pettersen and Kennie Nielson made the windward mark first but were overhauled by Sophie White and James Fosket on the downwind leg as they gybed on the shifts down the centre of the course. They kept their lead until the finish. Nick Ward and Tom Wright sailed consistantly well to put in the first of their three 3rd places of the day.

Race 7:

With the wind dropping to a force 1/2 and a slackening tide Will and Andy showed their light wind skills, leading all the way to finish ahead of Sophie and James.

Race 8:

The breeze was filling in on a slack tide during the race and local favorites Huw Humphries & Max Todd won their second race of the Championships and were followed by Sophie & James and Nick & Tom. Wednesday is a lay day and plans are made for trips to Dublin, Snowdonia and for pony trecking. No doubt the wind will be a steady force 4!
