An exciting time was had by competitors and rescue crews alike at the Castle Cove Sailing Club Junior Open.

In the morning, the almost non-existent winds rose rapidly to a force 4, gusting 5, catching some of the younger children unawares and others wishing they had reefed toppers or chosen smaller rigs for their lasers.

Several of the intrepid but less experienced Optimist sailors were forced to return to the clubhouse after some spectacular nose dives on a run to get out to the start.

The sight of a cluster of Optimists being towed back ashore didn't seem to dampen the enthusiasm of many younger sailors who, fortified by Mars bars and an excellent lunch, were keen to go out as crew in Mirrors with more experienced helms.

After lunch, the wind remained strong providing those who stayed the course with some challenging and exhilarating racing.

The new site for the club, with its improved launching facilities and spectacular views across Portland Harbour, proved to be an excellent venue for this event.
