Going on a flotilla in the Ionian this July with my family on a 49 foot Jeanneau. The flotilla has set places you have to be each night but I am putting together some plans for lunch stops each day. Would a total days sailing of 20 nautical miles over the ground (i.e. assuming we do not have to beat upwind) be a good length to target?

I have read that as a rule of thumb 100 Nm per day is the average a yacht will sail in 24 hours so 20 Nm for being on holiday with a decent lunch break and some swims sound reasonable??

Thnks

Its eminently doable, but ....The only predictable thing about the wind in the Ionian is that it is unpredictable. There is a good chance that you will do a lot of motoring (you will need to do at least 2 hrs a day to charge the batteries to keep the beer cold.) I wouldn't over plan it, take it day by day.

I would go armed with a plan of places that you would like to visit, but not get too detailed for now. You will do well to get to know some of the other groups in the flotilla and compare notes and do some cruising in company with them. They might have been before and know the best spots, or they might just appreciate the company. Either way, you will have more fun doing it with other boats and like minded families.
