Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand e-magazine for October 30, 2019
Last Friday, the MOD70 Beau Geste (Pat Kong) achieved what everyone had assumed would be impossible - beating then Team Vodafone Sailing's 2014 record time for the PIC Coastal Classic of 5hrs 13 minutes.
That time was reckoned to have been set in ideal conditions, and Simon Hull and his Merry Men chopped a massive 28 minutes off the previous record.
On Friday, Beau Geste lopped just under 13 minutes off Hull's record, taking five hours for the trip to Russell - a ride that takes four hours or more by car..
Although the race was sailed in fresh conditions, only 17 of the 150 starters failed to complete the 119nm course.
In this edition, we have full coverage of the PIC Coastal Classic - with plenty of images from the first few miles of the race. Most of the images are of Division 1 and the Multihulls. That situation is a function of the decision a couple of years ago to start the small boats first, and covering that fleet out into the Rangitoto Channel means you can't get back for the start of the Division 1 and Multihulls. In the old start format, it was a lot easier to cover the whole fleet.
