FIRST DAY OF MUMM 30 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN MIAMI, AMERICAN JEFF LADCHUN WINS TWICE IN A DAY

by Laura Jelmini on 10 Nov 2000 On the first day of the Mumm 30 world championship held in Miami Beach, Florida two windaward-leeward races has been sailed in a south easterly breeze building up to 17 knots.
The fleet charged the line of the firs race with too much enthusiasm at the 10:40 a.m. starting gun, resulting in a general recall. The next starting sequence was successful, with only a few boats over the line early in the 40 boat fleet.

'Maximumm Dread' helmed by young sailor Jeff Ladchun moved into the lead by the second leeward mark of the five leg course, followed by North American Class Champion Phil Garland's team on 'Trouble'. 'Maximumm Dread' got the finish gun, followed by Garland, with some other Mumm 30s. The Italian team of Alberto Signorini on Seven and Jimmy Pahun from France sailing Region Ile de France were both called over the line early in the first race, but both sailed hard to work into a seventh and ninth place respectively. Huge gains were made by both in the breezier second run of the race as they worked through the fleet. ignorini is well practiced from winning the 2000 European Championship and the Italian Circuit. Pahun sailed for a month in the round France Tour Voile competion where he claimed a fourth overall with tactician Terry Hutchinson.

Six boats were called over early by the race committee on the next start. The course was set at 125 degrees, with four legs at two miles each. Maximumm Dread was at the very crowded pin end of line, but managed to get a clear lane. The breeze shifted to the left 10 degrees on the beat, and the race committee called for course change at the top mark. 'Maximumm Dread' gained on the left side of the course to reach the top mark in first place, followed by Signorini, then Pahun and the 1999 world Champions Ed Collins and Barry Allardice on USA 48 in fourth.

The wind continued to shift to the left, resulting in another ten degree change of course at the top mark after the third leg. Mark roundings were spectacular, with groups of boats fighting for the same piece of water as they rounded the marks, often resulting in loud discussions of the racing rules amongst competitors.

'USA 65' helmed by Mark Dressel worked their way up through the fleet to move into fourth place on the second race. Ed Collins' 'USA 48' and 'Seven' battled it out for second and third, trading places right up to the downwind finish, where 'USA 48' caught a wave and surfed over the line inches ahead of 'Seven'. 'Maximumm Dread' sailed a perfectly consistent day to take their second bullet in this very competitive fleet. Jeff Gladchun attributed their stellar day to good teamwork and a good attitude onboard their boat with a young crew of friends from collegiate sailing.

Gladchun recently completed an Olympic campaign, where he finished sixth in the San Francisco trials. He met his tactician, Andy Horton, on the Soling circuit, where both were competing.Tomorrow weather permitting some more three races are scheduled.

The winner of the 1999 World Championship will be presented with the Royal Canadian Yacht Club trophy, a beautiful silver trophy loaned to the Class by the RCYC in 1998.
