Brindabella Delam’s, Shockwave thinks better of it.

by Editor on 27 Dec 2000
Brindabella Delam’s, Shockwave thinks better of it.

Andrew Jackson was sent to the forepeak of the mighty Brindabella around 7am, in a slamming seaway to check how the boat was travelling. Some loud cracks were heard and investigation found that delamination was starting to occur. After a group meeting, a disappointed George Snow decided at 8 20am that with a 45 knot forecast for later in the day meant that major damage was a possibility.

Richard Bennett flew over the returning Brindabella near Montague Island just after 11am. He is continuing south and will shortly see Neville Crichton’s Telstra Sydney to Hobart dreamboat Shockwave heading north, another victim of “wind against tide”. The Green Cape gate designed to make skippers review the readiness of their boat and crew for the Paddock had crystallised fears that the untested flyer might not be ready for the ugly seaway.

So the 2000 Telstra Sydney to Hobart is reshaped with the new leader Nicorette moving out to face the fury, Xena, a down wind sled is starting to fall back. Both these boats are now through the gate and the Volvo 60’s and the largest of the IMS sloops will soon be at the gate and have to make their radio declarations too!
