This is probably a naiive question from someone new to this forum.
Like most people I am fascinated by the coverage of the sailing in the olympics, but one thing is puzzling me.
I notice in all the classes such as dinghies etc all  the craft look identical. Are the participants expected to supply their own boats  or are they supplied by the olympic organising committee. As i said I know it's probably a naiive question but I can't imagine competitors bringing their boats from halfway round the world.

Not a daft question at all. It varies from class to class.
In the Finn, Star, 470 (Men and Women) and 49er the sailors do indeed bring their own boats. With the Finn and Star, there are subtle differences between the boats (especially the sails and masts) but these are hard enough to spot for sailors. The 49ers should be identical, and I'm not quite sure with the 470- think the sails are allowed to be different.

With the Laser, Laser Radial and the windsurfers the competitors are issued with the equipment (which is then sold on after the games).

With the Match Racing I don't theink they even use the same boat each day- the boats don't have the country on the bow, only the sails are marked.

For the "bring your own boat" ones the teams will these days send their boats by shipping container- with a host of spare parts, often with a coach boat, and sometimes a spare hull. British sailing is certainly a lot more organised in this than it used to be- going to the Atlanta games Shirley Robertson (now presenting) apparently had to check her Europe (a rather small dinghy) in as outsize-baggage on her flight out!

hah! wonder how much they'd charge for that- proabably cheaper to get a container!

(and obviously not, Ryanair have never done trans-Atlantic or served Heathrow, says the pedant)
