Andy,

See other thread to see why it was legal. They were not in separate fleets.

Yes

Dont do something that would you make you/one ashamed at a handicap event.

Enjoy handicap events for what they are - generally a bit of a lottery depending on the boat, venue, wind, course etc etc etc

Save the serious stuff for class racing.

You cant legislate for everyone though ?

I think the problem was perhaps a shortage of Fireballs. In the old days, they'd have been a mob, and competition to be top fireball would have dominated, even in non-fireball weather.

Woohoo, the old chestnut about handicap events not being serious, a bit of a lottery etc. So 850 entries over the 5 SJ events + another 100 at the Starcross Steamer, an average of over 150 per event, are to be discounted are they?

I think a look at the results of the top few boats would indicate they are up there, or thereabouts, in a variety of conditions and the 'improved' SJ handicaps have helped in this regard.

I don't think handicap racing can be dismissed so easily.

IMHO it's a shame there wasn't a protest, because as others have said this is the primary dispute resolution process in our sport. I can make an argument either way, ie pro Sam or anti Sam, as I tend to think that what he did is in a bit of a grey area which a formal protest hearing really should have had the opportunity to adjudicate on.

I do take the point and think its fantastic that so many boats entered.

I am not trying to dismiss handicap sailing - most of the racing worldwide is handicap - and so is most of mine.

The biggest sailing events are always handicap based.

The point with handicapracing is that there will be some days when you cant win and others when you almost cant lose - its boat and conditions dependent.

Some days you come off the water having sailed badly but still done well in a handicap event and visa versa.

Thats why I think it should be taken a bit less seriously - thats all.

Hi all,

I had an update from my contact on the RRAS today.

He advises that this was indeed discussed but at present there is no further advice.

This is not the end of the matter though as it has been referred for a more formal consultation with a request for a formal question to be put forward.

This could lead to it going up the chain to the ISAF and may result in recommndations/rule changes or an official oine with regards to what is or is not acceptable.

So today i spoke to an RYA youth squadie and asked the question of would you sail a slower boat down the fleet to win. His answer was simply "yes, we were taught to use the rules to win, and if that means sailing someone down the fleet then I'd do it"
The RYA are training ruthless killers!
