Does any one know what is the best paint to use for touching up a repair? have an area about 12" x 12" (30cm x30cm to those under 30) been told halfords fibreglass primer but then what?
Or is there something better?

I guess it depends what and where you are painting. I always use halford white primer on foils prior to wet and dry and fairing, gives a great long lasting finish. Its cheap and dries quickly so you can add multiple layers quickly. Also with it being a primer the finish comes out relatively even unlike a gloss paint.

Depends if its completely submerged in water constantly i suppose, but given this is posted in the dinghy section i guess your right it probably doesn't matter. Halfords Glass primer is usually top coated with their car spray paints, which would be fine on a dinghy but they don't flex as well as marine paints. Automotive sprays will have an additive in the paint on the plastic wing and bumper pannels to allow for more pannel flex. What are you painting over, i doubt very much you will get any kind of colour match from a spray can, even white has thousands of different shades therefore is there any real point in spraying over the repair at all, as it would still be visable? |

Really you should be using the same paint system again. You can get strange effects if you mix paint systems...

If you are going to stick progrip over it a Halfords Fibre glass primer will be fine, i doubt very much if you would get any kind of reaction.

It depends what you paint it with next time the whole job is done. Two pot paints especially are very aggressive, and it spoils your day rather thoroughly if traces from a patch bubble up and ruin the job. |
