Now the summer holidays are here, the local herberts are having a fun time.
Some fecking bar steward has redecorated my boat with a can or two good old spray paint. Does anybody have any good tips on the removal of this from gel coat without damaging it? will the gel coat resist thinners et al or do I need a T cut product? Many thanks for any help

I would just use a bit of T Cut followed by wax polish. Should do the trick. After all the paint film won't be that thick. Good luck.

A chandlers will sell you a stripper that is safe for gelcoat, ordinary nitromors is not.
I have seen brake fluid used to remove paint from some plastics, but that would depend on both the paint and the plastic, test it on a small inconspicuous area as they say. May not work with modern acryllic car paint anyway? (at your own risk that one!) You may find scraping will remove a lot of it, it depends on whether you had a good well polished gelcoat to start with? A skilled bloke with a polishing machine and the right sorts of Farecla will do the job, provided you don't have scratches that go nearly through the gel. Such scratches will now be full of paint. Good luck. |

Neat acetone is what you need. It will easily remove cellulose (spray paint) from gelcoat without any collateral damage. It does evaporate like there is no tomorrow, when you use it, so you might need a fair bit and only use in a well ventilated area i.e. outdoors! AND DON'T SMOKE whilst you use it !!!
You may well be able to get it from chemists as well as boat chandlers, GRP suppliers or DIY stores.
Basically the same as 'nail varnish remover' (although that may have other ingredients in to look after your nails). Edited by Andymac - 28 Jul 11 at 6:10pm |
