within my household it is illegal to tow with a toyota mr2.  Even the mere thought of using an mr2 to tow receives a severe sentence, and the suggestion that such a vehicle is fitted with a tow bar is punishable by threat of all boats being sold/burnt/given away as garden ornaments.
the same, but different...

Hmm sounds like someone in your household talks sense, particularly about burning your garden ornaments.

I towed a Tasar with a 1.0 fiesta and was fine although needed to change to quite low gears on dettling hill.
Some guys drove from Italy to Plymouth in a tiny Fiat (126? someone correct me) for the 2003 contender worlds with a double trailer.

Nope. It is illegal to fit towbars on certain types e.g. Ford Ka.

After a certain age, cars can only have type approved towbars.
For some cars there isn't one.
For other cars the manufacturer's maximum towing weight may be quite small, especially unbraked.
My Dad used to tow an enterprise behind a Mini Traveller, and load the boat with camping gear. Not sure I would try that in modern traffic. Also the gearbox did explode at one point!

Strictly speaking the car must be 'type approved' for towing. As the Ka was never type approved for towing it's illegal to fit any towbar to one hence no approved towbar exists.

I thought there was but it didn't seem feasable.

Legend has it that Uffa Fox used to car top his flying 15 to save ferry fares - hull on the roof and keel in the boot!

Many moons ago, we used to tow an Osprey behind an old 850cc Mini.

Best wishes from deep in the woods

apologies for thread necromancy , towing one dinghy on a single trailer is unlikely to tax the limits of unbraked trailer law (trailer MAM 750kg)

some small cars who can tow may not have a great deal of towing capacity in excess of that 750 kg , but I would be suprised to find any car with a 'legal' towbar that couldn't cope with the vast majority , if not all dinghies - the obvious exceptions being  the keelboat  dinghies ....
