That convinced me... If second and third votes are going to be at least as important as first votes then the way to be elected is likely to be some kind of characterless policyless lukewarm nothing with only getting elected as a policy... think there are too many of those already: the thought of a government consisting of the political equivalent of McDonalds burgers is, well, a bit too much to stomach... |

So does anyone know if the referendum is split 51 Yes / 49 No will that be enough to change the system? Or does there need to be a larger majority? Looking at our unofficial opinion poll above it may well be very close. The only difference is the "won't bother to vote" will be in the majority. |

I recall reading somwhere that there was an ammendment to the referendment bill stating that unless there was a 60% turnout and a 60% yes vote then the powers that be would take no notice of the will of the people - no idea if it was adopted though

The early reports I saw today suggested that the No vote appears to have it. Probably because they had a FPTP or AV instead of a 'should we look at other systems Yes/No' which may have got a significantly different result. For one I would have voted yes if it was for PR rather than AV....
