Does anybody know where we might be able to get some Laser 4000 rack parts manufactured? Obviously it's just aluminium tubing with some holes in it but Sailboats are out of stock and don't know when they're getting any more
![]() Perhaps it's time for a square head sail and a carbon rack

Sorry i can't help, but you may of found a great new thread! I think the 4k needs a facelift more then most, with some new foils carbon racks, rig and a new sail plan it could be awesome, even better if it could loose some weight as well. |

Once you add "lose some weight" ( bit like the 3000 I guess) you're veering dangerously close to the "a whole new class" zone. Then again, both the 4000 and Iso could do with being consigned to the landfill- though really, there's no modern equivalent to them- a single trap assymetric that big boys can can sail. Carbon racks are a potential minefield- though at least with distribution of weight on a 4000 (and the narrower wings) many of the issues (now solved) with the development of the B14 racks. Much pain has been suffered by the test pilots for those bad boys.

What you really need is for someone to come along and design some new exciting boats than wollowing around in the "lets update an 10 year + design" debate. I'm not that keen on a modernised old boat, why update a 400, 4000, ISO etc when you could actually wipe the slate clean and start with something much better. Wish some boat builders would grow some balls, invest in R & D and take boat design and manufacture more seriously again.
RS had a lot of good market research done about the acceptance of a new 400 replacement design, would love it if they, laser, ovington, vandercraft or someone else stepped up to the mark and launched a decent double handed modern SMOD, doubt it will happen though.

With high performance boats at what must be a least a 40 year low popularity wise its hardly suprising no-one wants to introduce a new one...

Back to subject:
Google "aluminium extrusions" then spend an hour or so dissapearing up the internet.
The tube size is probably available but maybe not as anodised. Also you may need a local engineering works for hole drilling and stuff like that.
Then of course you won't be class legal, which is a bit harsh if the parts are not available.

I giess I'd probably start by talking to Superspars or Needlespar/Hawk Marine, someone like that, and be prepared to be a hell of a premium for one off bits. The trouble is its twenty years since I was last in the market for one off bits of alloy tube, and of course all the faces will have changed, but both companies are basically run by sailors I think: I wouldn't be suprised if they were still as helpful as they used to be...

Doesn't sound like great service from Sailboats, who I thought claimed to have taken over as the exclusive supplier of L4k bits.
I find it quite astonishing how rapid the rise and fall of the 4000 and ISO has been.

It depends what you want from it as a class. If you want mass start circuit/open racing then the 4000 isn't ever going to the best choice anymore (although still not that bad). If you want a boat that is fast (908 PY) yet cheap enough for a bunch of mates to all buy and club race against each other then it is a superb choice. Three of us all decided to buy Laser 4000s at the start of the year and we've had a right laugh with them. This has encouraged others in the club and we now have 6 Laser 4000s at Castle Cove - all within one season. For us that's a rise and not a fall. I agree that Sailboats service can be a bit hit and miss. On one hand they have started manufacturing some replacement parts and they do discount the sails down to 'acceptable' levels for CA members, they just seem to drop some clangers in other areas every now and then.
