hi all,

im looking for some help and advice getting work in sales and marketing within the marine industry.

 
i havnt got a huge ammount of experience within sales or marketing areas but have worked in the marine industry in different sectors for a while.
 


any advice or useful contacts would be greatly appreciated

Well, i wouldn't use that font for starters. And I'd like to hear more about your sales experience rather than just "passion and "talent".  And you do realise that marketing and sales are different, don't you.

I seem to remember a recruitment agency that specialised in the marine industry advertising on Y&Y.  As i understand it its not an industry that pays massively.  I would love to do something to do with sailing, i have plenty of retail sales and B2B sales experience unfortunately it doesn't seem to pay the mortgage let alone my expensive sailing hobby.
I have always found writing to companies asking for jobs a bit like flogging a dead horse.  The best way into a job is referral or through a recruitment agent.  Most sales jobs getting the job is just like selling the product!  Getting your foot in the door is the hardest part!!  That is where recruitment agents earn their money.

Learning how to use capital letters and punctuation would be a good start.

find a different market;

- make some money (this IMO will be much "easier" in another market)
- develop your skills (makes the above "easier")

then; come back to the marine market when:

- you have paid off your mortgage on the nice seaside home you want (see points above)
- bought a nice boat or boats and paid them off (constant exposure won't make choosing easy)
- sailed it/them lots (you won't get time to because you'll be working weekends)
- have had time to build up an extensive list of cliquey mates in the marine trade you can call on first to get those commission checks rolling in before you try and crack something else (use your "free weekends to do this, as above)

The BMIF is a fine organisation - all strength to their arm.  The industry has some real characters in it and thankfully, very few b$$tard$ who want to rip you, or their own partners/employees off.

should actually read:

"only a very, very, few make serious cash out of the sailing world..."

As I advised (IMO only), it's a market I'd happily get into one day, with my eyes open, and once I'm not so bothered about paying bills and having copious amounts of time (!!!) to go sailing nice boats rather than doing demos, trade shows, organising events etc...  I imagine if you join in something other than a sales/marketing role, then opportunity could-well-knock and it could be very rewarding in terms of science, engineering or finance graduates.
