I have a Hobie Pacific with a self tacking jib arrangement.

I have been reading the RYA Catamaran Handbook and on Page 115 someone talks about having a backing line on a self tacker as a good idea.

I understand the idea but what exactly is it and how is it fitted to the self tacker?

At the moment I just get someone to hold the traveller until the bow is properly through the wind.

Thanks for any replies.

A thin line could be run from the jib traveller car, to the
end of the beam, around the boat and back to the jib car
from the other side. this could be routed so that the
helmsman could sit on it until the tack is done - useful
for single handing.

There is always potential for a foul up on an over-
elaborate system like this.

A crews single finger on the jib track is the best system!

A light line from the traveller to the shroud each side, long enough so it doesn't restrict the movement is often OK.
