The trouble is without knowing something about the task its awfully difficult to give you any sensible advice about the layup... I'd I were prototyping something I think blue styrofoam would be a lot more suitable for a solid core - lighter and easier to work. That big heavy core gives you enormous crush resistance and is dense enough to hold screws but if you don't need those characterstics its a lot of hassle...
