Just a quick shout out to the Monsoon Cup programming on sail.tv. The WMRT guys, Monsoon Cup and sail.tv are putting together some FANTASTIC footage for those who like watching match racing, and even if you're not a match race fan you can still learn a lot.. some of the things I like about it are: -
1) You can watch the full races - not all the flights but quite a lot of them are available online in full on the World Tour website - so rather than just the last 10 yds of the last beat you can get the full race from 4min gun to finish. Or just choose a higlihts package for a more condensed update. Should be some footage on Eurosport and/or Sky according to the website, but for me the internet stuff is great.. 2) Great commentary - America's Cup PJ and Andy Green combining well to give lots of strong analysis. Greeny has even been on the transom for some of the key matches with helmet cam - as good as being in the cockpit yourself. 3) They have mikes/cameras on all the boats - so listening to the competitors discussing tactics up/down wind is very interesting as well as their interaction with the umpires. Is there any other sport/footage where you can hear the tactics/strategy of the teams as it actually happens? Some of the chat between Ben and Perce is pretty amusing but with the odd fruity comment - especailly when the kite goes in the piss in the QF. 4) Virtual eye is there analysing the distance between boats - so that helps quantifying the gain/loss and is used by the commentators. 5) The streams are very reliable and good enough to watch at full screen without loosing too much resolution. Unfortunately Ian Williams was unlucky not to make the cut to the quarters, but on the other hand this means there will be a new World Champion and Ben/Perce are still in the mix and currently 1 up in their QF. Sat / Sunday they're running the finals live from 3pm which I make 7am our time - I'm going to set my alarm clock and get up and watch it. Why not do the same?? PS I'm just a fan with time on his hands, nothing to do with WMRT/Monsoon Cup or Sail.tv Edited by laser4000 |

Mirsky looses the QF in a tight 3-2 vs. Gilmour, but Ben, Gilly, Col & Minoprio all go through to the SF - therefore Minoprio has won the world champs!
Good work the kiwis.. |

Ainslie and Minoprio through to the finals.
Why are you so sure Minoprio will win?? |

Doug.. it's like F1 there are a number of events for the world tour/champs. Each event counts 25 points for a winner 20 for runner up etc, but the monsoon cup counts 38 points for 1st, 30 for 2nd as it's the final event of the tour and has to be counted - full scores and other info here http://www.worldmatchracingtour.com/la/636 Coming into the Monsoon cup Minoprio was on 100 points, Mirsky on 88. Mirsky didn't make the SF so could score a maximum of 15 points for 5th = 103. Minoprio who by that stage was definitely 4th or better would score 18 points = 118 and thus was crowned world champion as he couldn't be beaten by any of the other players left in e.g. Ainslie etc. If Ainslie wins the Monsoon Cup then by my calculations he'll come 2nd in the Tour (same points as Mirsky but better 1sts) which is pretty incredible considering he's done one less event that the rest of the guys.. Alarm set for 06:50 tomorrow, but I'll probably only get the 1st race in before I need to head to the coast for sunday racing... |

6.50am it is.... that's going to hurt.
I was confusing the title of the monsoon cup with the title of the match racing tour, everything makes much more sense now. Just a shame I haven't quite got the bandwidth to watch it smoothly. |

Full replays of the live coverage from sat/sunday are available here - select 'sunday live' or 'saturday live' for a full replay of each of the days.
Worth watching even if you're not into match-racing as (a) it shows how good tv coverage of sailing can be and (b) you can hear the audio discussion between the helms/tacticians and the rest of the crew, so great as a learning tool... |
