There certainly different skill levels involved, it all depends as to what level of maintenance you wish to do.  GRP will get away with less year on year maintenance, however it does benefit from a yearly polish (and T Cut).  Wooden boats if maintaned yearly (i.e. painted and varnished ) take a bit more work - but look soooo much better, and depending on class can last longer (if maintained!).

On the boatyard the GRP guy was less skilled than the wooden boat guy....  However there are different skills in each....

Not if you keep on top of it, do the yearly varnish, make damn sure that the cover is waterproof, no water pools in the boat, either sail regularly over the winter so nothing has a chance to build up or better still keep her indoors with frost and snow about.

If you don't though things can go badly wrong rather quickly. One winter with water left in the bottom of the boat thawing and freezing every frosty day will do a lot of damage.

Modern epoxy coatings, coupled with regular maintainence have helped with the work needed to keep wood looking good, but there is no doubt it takes more effort. If you love the look of wood, though, it could be worth it! If building from new in wood, it is easy to take steps to ensure long life. If working on an old boat, it can be harder, and will certainly take more regular work.
