There are lots of different ways to rig a mast that allow it to perform in different ways. But essentially Caps on dinghy's are used on boats that have mast head kites. To support the mast from the loads. They also allow you to control the pre-bend and rig reaction for tuning and gust response.

Caps control the bend of the top of the mast, on the 800 they are controlled by purchases because they need to be adjusted regularly but on yachts it would be done with standard bottle screws.

The caps on the 800 and most boats just have a purchase system attached to the bottom of the shrouds.

So if you look at this picture;
RS800 The Shrouds meet the mast where the trapeze wires do and the caps go from the base of the mast, around the spreaders to the top (or nearly) of the mast? How are the caps tensioned? |

Properly, cap shrouds go all the way to the mast head, as distinct from upper shrouds, which might only go 9/10s (or less) of the way up, as I understand it.

Cap Shrouds are the set of shrouds also called uppers that basically stop the top of the mast bending forward when the kite is up when the head of the kite is further up the mast than the point where the standard shrouds attach eg a mast head kite. But I'm sure there is someone on here with a much better explination.

I'd assumed that it's just another name for the lowers. Am I wrong?
