ISTR some scepticism a while back on the subject of two pot paints lifting underlying layers of one pot, the conventional wisdom being that you must never put two pot on one pot.
This afternoon I was using a bit of two pot thinners to thin down some wood filler, and I must have spilt a little on the foredeck of the boat in the garage. It has very comprehensively lifted a large patch of the nice shiny one pot varnish I put on about last November or December, so its absolutely no myth... [fx: screams loudly and stamps feet]

How to tell?     old boat with paint, is it two pack paint or one pack?

Acetone will disolve one pack almost instantly, two pack stays put (for a while). Acetone not as available as it once was because with some bleach you can make TNT with it, aint the internet brilliant

Hi,

"Acetone not as available as it once was ..."

No problem at my local chandler !

The "official" way to tell is to use some 2 pot thinners - but this is as expensive as a 500ml pot of paint/varnish...

If the one pot has been on a long time this doesn't happen. Less than 12 months and you have problems. Also remember thinners are a little stronger than paint or varnish :)

One pack and two pack are not really compatible, but are more compatible than is generally believed
